Course Description

The REMOTE REPORTER is a series of videos of 25 minutes or less in which our faculty members share techniques and tips especially calibrated to help journalists and journalism students continue their work while they self-isolate, weather the COVID-19 pandemic and seize the opportunities 2021 has to offer.

In this episode, John Smock shares resources for video journalists and journalism students stuck at home, including how to find and use copyright-free, royalty-free and user-generated footage in your work. Produce compelling video content even when you can’t produce original content. Through examples, John shares resources and techniques for:

  • Screen grabs
  • Screencasts
  • Small animations
  • Graphic material
  • Archival photos and video

John Smock

John Smock is the director of Photojournalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.He is a photojournalist who works for SIPA, a photo agency with offices in New York and in Paris, and the Associated Press. His work has appeared in many publications including The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, and washingtonpost.com.Full bio here.
